Meme - Women in GOT

Description

When I was young I already used to get mad when someone was saying "The Lord of the Rings ? That's so macho". So what ? That's a male world. And in the case you didn't notice, even if there are just three women in that story (Arwen, Galadriel and Eowin), they all are powerful or strong. So, macho ? I don't think so.

The same goes for GOT, I heard women saying that they hate the show because it is freakin macho, but ... I'm sorry, this is a fantasy-medieval world, and medieval societies were sexist. What's peculiar with GOT is the realistic aspect of its story, so yeah, that's a ''male'' show. However, if you really pay attention to the number of strong (physically or mentally), powerful or completely badass feminine characters in Westeros, you'll see that it isn't macho at all.

/!\ IF YOU DIDN'T WATCHED SEASON 1 TO 4, DON'T READ THIS.

- Arya Stark : She's a little girl, but she's fierce, and tenacious. She is the first figure that we see in the show who stands as the stereotype of "the girl who doesn't want to be a girl". A cliché that we all love in all stories. The more she grows, the more she becomes dark and agile with her sword : she already killed several men. And just wait for what is coming in the next season.

- Brienne of Tarth : Do we really need to linger over her ?

- Catelyn Stark : Lady Stark ruled over the North with Ned before the tragedy that we all know. She was a powerful and strong woman, that did many things with the status that she had, even when her husband was absent. She captured a Lannister, risked her life several times and was sent twice negociating for her son. And yeah, she had moments of weakness, but who doesn't ?

- Daenerys Targaryen : The last Targaryen really changed just during the first season : from a shy, weak young girl afraid of her invasive brother, she became a strong Khaleesi. With three dragons, no less. After escaping from the death in the desert, she eliminates her enemies and conquers three great cities, appointing an army of 8 000 soldiers and delivering slaves by the way.

- Cersei Lannister : When Tywin Lannister wasn't the Hand of the King, Cersei was behind all the plots in King's Landing. Just one word and she can send someone kill another for her. King Robert (she put a drug in the wine of her husband before he went hunting), and many others. She looses control over Joffrey and she's not as powerful as her father, but she's still one of the most powerful women in Westeros.

- Melisandre : Even if the show tends to make her manipulate Stannis Baratheon more than she does in the books, she's a powerful witch. In the show, she's so persuasive that she is like the head of the Stannis camp. Convincing words, seductive manners. Melisandre is also an undeniable strong woman.

- Sansa Stark : I hesitated before putting Sansa on this. She cries all the time, she seems to be so weak, pretending to love Joffrey and to be pleased with her status in the court. But seriously, don't you think a normal person wouldn't have already killed herself in this situation ? I thought about a scene in the second season : Joffrey was ordering his guards to beat her, Tyrion rescues her, and asks her if she's okay. She answers as always that she loves Joffrey, blah blah, then Tyrion says that after all, she will survive. We saw in the last season that she apparently will become darker for the following seasons, with all the Littlefinger stuff. So check, Sansa deserves her place in the powerful women in Westeros.

- Margaery Tyrell : A smart and complex character that uses her charms in order to get what she wants. We don't always know what she thinks, but what we can be sure about, is that she's ambitious and ready for everything to be queen. And she succeeds pretty well for the moment.

- Olenna Tyrell : Probably the richest woman in Westeros, and one of the most powerful. She just sends everyone packing in the series. Place deserved.

- Ygritte : Badass wildling that does archery like no one. She lives in a male world and gained the respect of her companions. Always ready for the battle, and with a bad tempered. Her only weakness was a guy who knew nothing.

- Osha : The wildling who's been kept prisoner in Winterfell before becoming like a nurse for the young Starks. She does everything in order to protect them, and she can cheat on men and kill them easily as she lived beyond the Wall in the past. Strong woman again.

- Yara/Asha Greyjoy : Badass captain that knows better war than her brother. The only appreciable Greyjoy.

- Missandei : Like a slave before joining Daenerys, she reveals herself more and more as she stays at Khaleesi's side. She's a pretty tenacious character, cultivate, talented, smart. Interesting quote by her queen :  "All men must die, but we are not men''. Check.

- Talisa Maegyr : We won't talk about the episode 9 of the third season, but in some ways, we can say that Lady Talisa is a strong woman in the show. I mean the first time we see her she talks to her presumed king like he was an ignorant boy. Brave girl, no ? Perhaps that's why Robb fell in love with her.

- Meera Reed : Just a young girl that knows how to deal with weapons. She does not really stands out for the moment, but a girl who deals with weapons is a strong girl, right ? Check.

- Shae : Okay, before saying that she's an incredibly ignorant bitch, what I agree with, I do not deny that she's strong too. She can stand up to the others and she's always armed with a quick-fire reply. She seems to sincerely love Tyrion in the show, and she has to deal with his marriage with another woman that she serves, to hide for him (she even has a dagger under her dress) and she prefers face him instead of leaving when Varys advices her to do so. What comes next is another matter.

- Gilly : That's questionable, but I think Gilly deserves this place. She grew in a morbid environment, still she's ready to everything in order to protect her child. She saw a white Walker, battles, but she's tenacious. She is armed with quick-fire reply too. In a certain way, she's strong.

- Nymeria, Tyene and Obara Sand : Three characters that we didn't see yet in the show. They will appear in the fifth season, and if you saw the video of the new cast, or even if you read the books, you'll understand rapidly why I put them here.
